Five Herbs and Veggies to Plant in Your Northern Nevada Garden
It doesn’t take a well-seasoned gardener to plant and grow fresh herbs and veggies during the planting season. With a few varieties, you can both beautify your yard and incorporate some freshly grown goodies into your meals with very little upkeep along the way.
Onions
Growing onions is more of a challenge when it comes to timing. They like cool weather in the early part of their growth, so plant them in as soon as you soil is tillable in the spring. Once the weather begins to warm further, you onions will grow tops and form bulbs. During this stage, they need full sun and a least 13-16 hours of light daily to ensure a harvest by summer.

Lettuce
Most lettuce is considered full sun vegetables and will grow the fastest when given as much sunlight as possible. Partial shade may be required if being grown in a hot climate. Plant your lettuce as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring.

Basil
Basil loves to grow in warm and sunny spots. To make your Basil plant thrive, give it 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. In hot climates, afternoon shade might be required. Plant basil in late spring once the soil and air are warm.

Mint
Most mint varieties prefer full to partial sun exposure, so check your specific type when purchased to see if it needs to be protected from the hot afternoon sun. Plant mint in the spring after the last frost.

Cilantro
Cilantro thrives in full sun (although light shade might be required in not climates where the sun is intense. Plant your cilantro in well-drained moist soil sometime in late spring once the weather is consistently warm. Safe for pets? Yes
